I guess that is the force of my complaint about the notation H char G: that it's not very elegant. I also don't like the fact that it in no way resembles the other group inclusion notations, such as "is a subgroup of" and "is a normal subgroup of". Algeboy makes a good point that filling in the triangle takes time to do on the chalkboard. Perhaps something like \triangleleft but with a horizontal line through it (not a vertical line, lest it get confused with "is not a normal subgroup of") would better address my concerns yet better address Algeboy's concern of writing time? Another issue is that such a symbol doesn't exist in TeX to the best of my knowledge.
