| I would also worry that as Z-modules some free R-modules would not be free Z-modules, so tensoring a free resolution over R as Z-modules might make the resulting complex less useful.
For instance, it would be annoying to started with R as a field so every module was a vector space, but then by tensoring over Z one would loose the vector spaces and be stuck with some dumb abelian groups. Ouch!
