Looks interesting. Can the laser pass through the infinitesimal gap at any angle?
I think it would be best to work the problem backwards. Start with the exit path, and then start considering the combinations from there.
Is there a proof of the first statement? (There are 80840...) It might be illuminating.
Anyway, just throwing some stuff in there. I'll keep you posted with any results.
