Okay, that is indeed a problem that I didn't think about.

I don't think either of the two options is appropriate for an encyclopedia. The reason is that an encyclopedia, unlike a book, does not have the luxury of covering only one standard and excluding the other. In fact, quite the contrary is true: an encyclopedia must alert the reader to all the commonly used meanings of a term, even when they are inconsistent with each other.

I have added you to the access list for "ring homomorphism" so feel free to add to the entry an explanation of all this if you wish to compose one. In the meantime I have slightly changed the wording of the entry to cure the worst of the pitfalls.
