[parent] Viewing Correction to 'Sard's theorem'
awkward warding, mistake by rmilson

Correction id: 1133
Filed on: 2002-10-18 06:59:39
Status: Rejected on 2002-11-12 22:54:28
Type: Erratum

Correction text:
1) The beginning of the entry is awkwardly warded.

Suggestion: change wording to

"Let \phi:X^n -> Y^m be a smooth map between manifolds of dimension
n, and m respectively. We say that a p\in X is a critical point, if..."

2) The definition of critical point should be

"if the differential, considered as a linear transformation of real vector
spaces has less than maximal rank, that is the rank of \phi_* is
strictly less than min(m,n)"

A critical point of a smooth map on smooth manifolds is a point where the differential is not onto its image (i.e., the rank is less than the dimension of the image). Perhaps it would be more clear if I mention that the differential is not onto at a critical point.
