Help....! Please don't talk about the political history of the
USA here unless it actually is relevant to mathematics.

In an ideal world, politics would have no effect whatsoever on mathematics, any of the sciences, or even the arts. But we don't live in an ideal world. Certain mathematical fields, like cryptography and the geometry of trajectories, will get more attention in wartime, while even in peacetime the whims of politicians can have an effect on what kind of scientific research gets funding. Thus, the political history of the United States is of great importance to the history of mathematics, or indeed any science, in the United States.

Maybe it's not directly relevant to mathematics, but it certainly is relevant to mathematicians. I had never before thought about how there were so few American mathematicians during the Revolutionary era (or "insurgent" if you prefer). The downside of being a "Renaissance man" is of course that you don't learn anything in depth. Another good point PrimeFan makes is that the Jewish exodus was very beneficial to America. In fact, I think we wouldn't be as important today in the world of mathematics if it hadn't been for the Jewish exiles of World War II.
