"Given a subset $\tau$ of $S$, the union of all the elements of $\tau$ is again an element of $S$"
This is not quite true.. The union of totally ordered subsets does not need to be a totally ordered subset, right?
But yes, $S$ is partially ordered with inclusion, and the union of all elements of a chain in $S$ is indeed a totally ordered subset. Therefore we can apply Zorn's Lemma, etc.. | No comment from object owner CWoo.
