Where does this notation come from? A reference would be good. Also some sort of indication of what it is used for would be nice.

The origin of the notation is unkonown to me but I've seen it many times in the discrete math-combinatorics-compsci fields although I think its obvious the double factorial name comes from its similarity from the normal factorial

and its use, well,the simplest I can think is to write something large in a compact form /jsut like normal factorial does)
