"let p_x the probability of X taking a particular value x and then make f(x) equal to p_x (and 0 if is not in the sample space)."
I would suggest leave this part out. It is incorrect. For a continuous random variable "the probability of X taking a particular value x" is always zero. The _density_ function may not be zero at x, but the _probablity_ that X=x is zero.
