adjacent (Definition)

Given a right triangle with an acute angle $ \theta$, the side of the triangle that is adjacent to $ \theta$ is the side of the triangle that is also a side of $ \theta$ and is not the hypotenuse.

\begin{pspicture}(0,-2)(4,4) \pspolygon(0,0)(4,4)(4,0) \rput[b](2,0){adjacent} \... ...15){$\theta$} \rput[l](0,0){.} \rput[a](4,4){.} \rput[b](4,0){.} \end{pspicture}

When a phrase such as “adjacent of an angle” is used, one must determine from context whether it refers to this definition of adjacent or the other definition of adjacent. Note that the definition supplied above is specifically for right triangles.
