Elias Menachem Stein (1931 - ) Jewish Belgian-born American mathematician and author, best known for his work on harmonic analysis. Many of his textbooks on analytical topics are becoming standard for university courses in the United States.
Escaping Nazism, the Stein family first arrived in New York. In 1955, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and began teaching at Princeton the next decade, eventually receiving the Princeton President's Award for Distinguished Teaching. Other honors Stein has received include the Wolf Prize, the Schock Prize and the National Medal of Science (awarded by the National Science Foundation). Stein's Princeton students include Charles Fefferman and Terence Tao.
