Rings

Forums:

I was wondering why are rings call like that. I've tried looking on the web for the reason, but I haven't found anything. Personally, I remember that years ago when I first saw the term on the list of math courses, I thought it was a course about geometry...

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was because some of the simplest (and first) examples are the rings of integers modulo n for some n. These sort of go round in rings... I don't know how true this is though.

Dedekind introduced "ring"; see http://members.aol.com/jeff570/r.html
It doesn't come clear, why such a name and not some other.
