History of Laplace Transforms

I was curious if anyone here knew a good place to read about this. I wondered what were the initial motivations and then when has this method become widely popular.

I remember reading that, and I can kinda see how there are connections with gamma function and probability and Laplace Transforms... But, how do we get from there to it being a widely known technique which is applied to non-probabilistic applications? I suppose I could google it, I just thought I'd start by querying PM.

If you find out, perhaps you could write an overview topic article for PM?

My understanding (which should not be taken too seriously as it
may be all wrong) is that Laplace came out with his transforms
in the course of his work on probability theory in connection
with generating moments.
