Definition. The [x,d]n is defined for any number x, any stepsize d and any n, except for -x{d,2d,,nd}, by

[x,d]n:={j=0n-1(x-jd)n1n=0j=1-n1x+jd-n,-x{d,2d,,nd}.

If x=n, d=1 and n then

[n,1]n={n(n-1)(2)(1)n>01n=0,

on which it follows that [n,1]n=n!. This is why the above definition generalizes the notion of the usual factorialMathworldPlanetmath.
